Everyone's Harvest Farmers Market
My service learning was conducted at Everyone's Harvest at the Natividad hospital in Salinas C.A. The goal of this organization is to promote the business of local small business farmers, and to give them a location to sell their produce and other goods. My duties at this organization was to assist the farmers in whatever they needed, such as moving produce and helping them set up stands to assisting them in communicating with their clients if there was a language barrier between Spanish and English. During my service at everyone's harvest i gained an understanding of what it was like to be an Mexican immigrant in the United States, and how difficult it is. One vendor which i remember vividly was about my age, i spoke with him daily and learned about who his family members are, when his family immigrated and why he was selling produce at the market. He was selling flowers at the market in order to earn enough money to go to the very college that i was attending, he also said that if it weren't for the farmers market, his business would be overshadowed by the larger corporations, and he would not be able to afford a college education. This experience was very beneficial to me because it allowed me to see the difficulties that immigrants have in the United States, it also has directed me to become more active in my community and have a more open mind to what it is that i want to do with my college education. This course satisfies requirements in MLO's 2 and 3
